These three murals by Malditas Ternura constitute a reinterpretation of the painting Forest landscape with elegant hunting party (1614) by the Flemish master Denis van Alsloot (1570-1626). The original is exhibited close to the interpretation in the Alte Galerie of the Universalmuseum Joanneum.

Nature romanticized

This work by Denis van Alsloot, known as a pioneer of Brussels landscape painting, shows a majestic scene featuring an aristocratic hunting party in the midst of a dense forest landscape. The painting combines realistic depictions of nature with scenes of life at court, bringing the nobility and nature together in idealized harmony in a manner frequently observed in seventeenth-century art.

Nature, wildlife and architecture

The Argentine artist collective Malditas Ternura reinterpreted the painting across three adjoining building façades. The collective has previously drawn on works by other artists as a starting point for its own creations. Its work combines graphic elements with traditional painting.

In their interpretation, the artists dedicated each façade to a theme found in van Alsloot’s Forest Landscape: nature, wildlife and architecture. These themes are represented through both graphic and realistic imagery.

Original and reinterpretation side by side

The location of the reinterpretation in the urban space of Graz enables you to directly compare it to the original painting in Schloss Eggenberg’s Alte Galerie.
