On 1 September, the Kaiserschild Foundation, in collaboration with universities across Austria, awarded the Dr Hans Riegel Special Prize for media-based final-year projects for the first time. At a formal awards ceremony held at the University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt, four outstanding entries were honoured in the categories of video and podcast.

In the video entry category, Nico Hyden from RG-ORG St. Ursula in Klagenfurt took first place with his impressive project ‘Ants in the Microcosm’. Second place went to Ishita Walia from BG|BRG Villach St. Martin, whose video explored the topic ‘Turing Patterns: Kinetics and Environmental Drivers in Reaction-Diffusion Systems’. Lisa-Marie Urbanz from the Bischöfliches Gymnasium Graz took third place with an entry on chicken breeding and rearing in Styria, for which she carried out considerable field research.

In the podcast category, Agnes Zweimüller from the Stiftsgymnasium Kremsmünster impressed the judges with her production “Therapy Dogs in Primary Schools – Enrichment or Distraction” and was awarded first place for it.
The entries were judged by a panel of experts comprising Philipp Spitzer, Assistant Professor at the Centre for Chemistry Education at the University of Graz, and Ortrun Gröblinger, Head of Digital Media and Learning Technologies at the University of Innsbruck.

Both emphasised the high quality of the media projects submitted, as well as the winners’ ability to present scientific content in a well-founded manner whilst making it accessible to a wide audience.

The winners will receive prize money ranging from 200 to 600 euros, as well as the opportunity to join an exclusive alumni programme. The schools’ commitment was also recognised: the educational institutions of the first-place winners will each receive a non-cash prize worth 250 euros.
