From 18 to 22 January 2026, the CERN specialist seminar offered MINT TANK scholarship holders an intensive introduction to modern particle physics. The varied programme combined theoretical fundamentals with practical workshops and exclusive visits to some of the world’s largest experiments.

Following an introduction to CERN’s history, organisation and research topics, the second day focused on subjects such as relativity, accelerator physics and antimatter research, including a visit to the Antimatter Factory.

The third day offered insights into the ISOLDE facility and the CERN data centre, as well as an interactive workshop on data analysis using real data sets from the ATLAS experiment. A particular highlight was the visit to ATLAS Underground, where participants were able to view the gigantic detector. On the fourth day, there was an excursion to the ALICE experiment, which investigates the state of matter shortly after the Big Bang.

The specialist seminar was complemented by visits to the CERN Control Centre, discussion and reflection sessions, and career information. The combination of theory, hands-on experience and direct insights into ongoing experiments gave participants an in-depth understanding of particle physics and scientific work at CERN. The MINT TANK is a comprehensive support programme for winners of the Dr Hans Riegel Specialised Prize.
