On 11 September, the Dr Hans Riegel Awards in biology, chemistry, geography, mathematics and physics were presented at the Leopold Franzens University of Innsbruck. The subject jury recognised outstanding final projects by school-leavers from Tyrol and Vorarlberg.

The Vice-Rector of the University of Innsbruck opened the event with a speech in which she praised the award winners’ curiosity and highlighted their great commitment.

First place in the Biology category went to Matthias Weber from the BRG in der Au in Innsbruck. In his project, he examined the effects of atrial fibrillation on the quality of life of those affected. In Chemistry, Florian Fieber from the BRG Innsbruck was awarded first prize for his ABA on the topic ‘Fats and their analysis using selected examples’.

Also from the BRG Innsbruck is the winner of the Physics category – David Mayr. He submitted his project under the title ‘Gravitation: Theory, Significance, Measurement and Applications in Modern Physics’. In Mathematics, Mathilda Stelmecke impressed the judges with her ABA ‘Modelling Population Data’, securing first place. She attended the Akademisches Gymnasium Innsbruck. Maximilian Hilber from the BG/BRG Sillgasse took first place in the Geography category. He wrote his paper on the topic: ‘UNESCO Cultural Heritage Field Names: Significance and Added Value, using the example of Obernberg am Brenner’.

Winning the Dr Hans Riegel Special Prize not only recognises the impressive achievements of the prize-winners, but also enables all 11 winners to join the MINT TANK network. This is an alumni programme that offers them opportunities for networking and participation in interdisciplinary events.
