On 16 June, seven A-level graduates were awarded the Dr Hans Riegel Special Prize in collaboration with universities from across Austria for their outstanding media-based final projects in the categories of podcast, architecture and outdoor space design, and video. The award ceremony took place in a festive setting at the University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt.

This year’s sole winner in the ‘Podcast’ category came from the BRG in der Au in Innsbruck: Moritz Goller explored the topic of ‘Sleep in competitive sport’ and was awarded first prize for his entry.

Johanna Eckerstorfer from the BRG Wels Wallererstraße secured first place in the ‘Architecture and Urban Design’ category. In her final project, she planned a possible redesign of Wels’s town square with a view to improving the quality of life in urban spaces. To this end, she not only conducted interviews with experts in urban planning and city marketing, but also created her own 3D model. Second prize went to Nina Scheiflinger from the Porciagymnasium in Spittal an der Drau for her project ‘The Design of a Gated Community – an Analysis of the Architecture and its Impact on Social Interactions’, for which she created her own portfolio featuring professional renderings. Anna Leili from the BRG/BORG Schloss Traunsee also impressed the judges with her conversion of a Ford Transit into a camper van and her detailed documentation of the process, for which she was awarded third prize.

“From Disability to Peak Performance: Prosthetics as Game-Changers in Paralympic Sport” is the title of Moritz Bräutigam’s video entry, for which the sixth-form student from the Kollegium Aloisianum in Linz was awarded first prize. Second place went to Aaron Gessati from the Khevenhüller Gymnasium in Linz. He made his video on the topic “Monitored, analysed, sold – Why you shouldn’t just click ‘Accept cookies’”. Third place in the video category went to Philipp Thomann from the BRG Klagenfurt-Viktring. For his media-based ABA project “The adaptation of wild animals to humans”, he filmed impressive footage himself in the field.

The entries were judged by a panel of experts comprising Philipp Spitzer, Assistant Professor at the Centre for Chemistry Education at the University of Graz; Ortrun Gröblinger, Head of Digital Media and Learning Technologies at the University of Innsbruck; and Martin Pittner, Head of the Bachelor’s degree programmes in Business Consultancy and Journalism and Corporate Communication at the University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt.

The Dr Hans Riegel Specialist Prize not only comes with a cash prize but also offers the opportunity to join the MINT TANK support programme, which provides networking opportunities and access to interdisciplinary events.
