At the start of the event, the teachers were given an introduction to the fundamentals, examination methods and diagnostics of ophthalmology. They learnt the difference between cataracts and glaucoma and discovered how cataract surgery can now be carried out in just a few minutes under local anaesthetic.
The participants were even able to watch a recording of this, which they are allowed to share with their pupils. The highlight of the visit was the subsequent practical session, during which the teachers were able to carry out selected ophthalmological examinations themselves, working in pairs or groups under the guidance of Karin Pekovits. Using laboratory equipment, they measured, for example, intraocular pressure, dioptres and the length of the eyeball, and were even able to examine the optic nerve under a microscope.
The “Current Physics” training series offers lower secondary school teachers up-to-date subject-specific input and combines this with ideas on subject-specific teaching methods for the classroom. The project is being implemented in cooperation between the Kaiserschild Foundation, the University of Education and the Regional Centre for Physics Teaching Methodology.
