From 20 to 22 February, the MINT TANK induction programme for this year’s winners of the Dr Hans Riegel Specialised Prize took place in Linz. Over the course of three days, the participants were able to gain an insight into various specialist fields.

The event began with a keynote speech by Alexander Lichius from the University of Innsbruck, who not only spoke about cell biology research but also answered participants’ questions about his scientific and personal career. The evening rounded off with a pub quiz. Saturday began at Johannes Kepler University with a keynote speech by Jörg Fischer, who provided insights into the plastics circular economy. Afterwards, participants had the opportunity to identify and recycle plastics themselves in workshops. The afternoon programme consisted of guided tours at Linz Zoo on the topics of ‘species conservation’ and ‘behavioural biology’, as well as a guided tour of Linz city centre. After dinner, a BarCamp took place, where participants could discuss topics of their own choosing.

The group spent their final day at the Ars Electronica Centre. In his talk, Thomas Viehböck provided insights into the fundamentals of artificial intelligence – after which themed guided tours of the Centre and a visit to Deep Space brought the event to a close.

MINT TANK is a comprehensive support programme for winners of the Dr Hans Riegel Specialist Prize. In addition to the introductory event, membership of the MINT TANK also enables participants to take part in MINT TANK specialist seminars, the Dr Hans Riegel Academy and the MINT TANK Professional programme. The next opportunity to become part of the MINT TANK is by winning a Dr Hans Riegel-Award in 2026.
